Home News Messaging Malware Mobile Anti-Abuse Working Group Honors Troy Hunt of Have I Been Pwned with Mary Litynski Award

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., Feb. 22, 2022 – The Mary Litynski Award recognizing lifetime achievement for making the Internet safer has been awarded by the Messaging Malware Mobile Anti-Abuse Working Group (M3AAWG) Troy Hunt, founder of Have I Been Pwned.

Hunt was honored at the group’s 54th general meeting, where members of the group are meeting this week to collaborate, discuss and resolve messaging delivery and abuse issues; improve online safety; address cybersecurity across devices, networks and the IoT; and learn about industry standards and policy issues.

Hunt created Have I Been Pwned, which allows site visitors to check whether their email has been part of a data breach. He created the free service in 2013 after working on what was the largest data breach at that time. The site tracks hundreds of breaches and works to educate consumers about the risks of simple or poorly constructed passwords. The site also helps inform consumers about the effects of data breaches, the collection of personal information and how it’s used and how to protect themselves. To date, the site reports that 11,746,416,911 records have been compromised. More info on the service and links to social channels is available at https://www.troyhunt.com.

The Mary Litynski award has been offered since 2011 to those making significant contributions to reducing spam, fighting bots or malware, or safeguarding other aspects of online messaging, including mobile devices and social networks, over a significant period. Work can be technical, related to public policy, or be educational in nature while protecting end-users and building and maintaining a trusted environment for online messaging. Previous honorees include visionaries to identify and prevent spam, bots, malware, cyberbullying and online child abuse and protect national cybersecurity operations.

More information on this week’s meeting can be found at https://www.m3aawg.org/upcoming-meetings and Twitter (@M3AAWG), LinkedIn, Facebook and YouTube. Session updates and more info also will be posted on the blog.
