Home M3AAWG Blog Welcoming M3AAWG’s Newest Expert Advisor: Betsy Broder
Posted by the M3AAWG Content Manager

Betsy Broder, an attorney, M3AAWG member, and consumer protection professional with world-class expertise and decades of public service with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC), has been officially named M3AAWG’s newest Expert Advisor.

Selected for their deep expertise and industry insight, M3AAWG Expert Advisors offer members valuable guidance and fresh perspectives—helping advance our shared mission of building a world free of online abuse.

Protecting citizens from the threats of identity theft and cyber fraud has been the hallmark of Betsy’s distinguished career. Most recently, Betsy served as Counsel for International Consumer Protection within the FTC’s Office of International Affairs.

"With Policy & Regulations serving as one of our newly named organizational priorities, the timing could not be more perfect to have someone with Betsy’s unmatched expertise and background join us as an Expert Advisor," said Sara Roper, Chairperson of the M3AAWG Board of Directors.

A Longtime M3AAWG Contributor

Betsy has participated in numerous M3AAWG meetings throughout her career, sharing insights on emerging cyber threats, fraud, and the coordinated efforts required to bring bad actors worldwide to justice.

“M3AAWG meetings have always offered rich opportunities to learn about emerging fraud events and technologies related to cyber messaging abuses. The FTC often was able to leverage that information to identify potential enforcement actions,” she said.

She described M3AAWG meetings as an important forum for building connections between the FTC, the U.S. Department of Justice, other enforcement agencies, and industry professionals working with technology who often are the first to identify emerging threats.

“It’s important to have these connections in place. They enable industry professionals on the front lines to say, ‘I know someone at the FTC who might be interested in this,’ and that person could help us coordinate efforts to thwart the activity better and bring some of these abusers to justice,” Betsy noted.

A Unique Skillset

Betsy originally joined the FTC with a focus on traditional consumer fraud, like telemarketing cons and get-rich-quick schemes, which later evolved with the internet into more sophisticated and challenging scams.

She directed and oversaw the FTC’s role in the Presidential Identity Theft Task Force and led efforts to address the profound harms faced by identity theft victims—such as catastrophic damage to their credit scores—that previously were not being addressed.

During her time as Chief of the FTC’s Criminal Liaison Unit, she helped bring numerous bad actors to justice by partnering with criminal prosecutors. A highlight of her international consumer protection work includes her pivotal role in helping to dismantle a major IRS impersonation scam in India that received a 2017 headline in The New York Times.

“Building a lasting, abuse-free environment requires a coordinated effort between industry and governing bodies,” said Amy Cadagin, M3AAWG Executive Director. “We need policy-informed approaches, and Betsy’s unique blend of networking skills, legal acumen, and enforcement experience will significantly enrich our efforts moving forward.”

With the continued growth of our Expert Advisor program, M3AAWG remains committed to bringing together diverse, high-impact leaders who can help guide our work with clarity, strategy, and cross-sector insight. Advisors like Betsy Broder strengthen our ability to address abuse from every angle, legal, technical, and policy, ensuring M3AAWG remains a collaborative force in building a safer, more secure internet for all.
